Disater Services Volunteers
The American Red Cross honors our men and women serving in the military through its long-standing Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) program. The Red Cross began providing services for America’s military during the Spanish-American War, when Red Cross founder Clara Barton recruited nurses to help the Army at medical camps. Red Cross nurses again provided medical care to soldiers during World War I, and services grew during the second World War to include emergency communications and a blood donation program. Since then, the Red Cross has been present at every major military operation, including in Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait and Iraq.

Today, Red Cross services to the United States Armed Forces are delivered through its network of more than 700 chapters, two nationally staffed call centers, offices on military installations and by deployed staff serving alongside service members in the Middle East. Red Cross volunteers provided more than 80,000 hours of service in Veterans Affairs Health Care Facilities throughout the United States and it’s territories. Additionally, Red Cross handled more than 600,000 emergency communications services for 174,000 families and provided $5.8 million in financial aid in partnership with the military aid societies.

The American Red Cross is proud to continue it’s support to men and women in uniform, veterans and their families.
